How to ask for a date in Spanish

If you have found someone you are interested in and would like to ask for a date, you probably find yourself in that nerve racking stage of trying to get up the courage to ask them out.

When you add in the factor that the person speaks Spanish as their primary language and you are new to the language, you add a whole other level to the situation. Learning how to ask for a date in Spanish is easy because the basic way to ask someone out starts with the same beginning.

Do you want to go out to…
¿Quieres salir a (infinative verb)?
Kee-YEHR-ehs sah-LEER ah…

You then finish this sentence with whatever you are asking them to do such as:

dinner dance lunch
cenar bailar almorzar
seh-NAHR bah-ee-LAHR ahl-mohr-ZAHR
So that the finished product would look like this:

Do you want to go out for a drink?
¿Quieres salir a tomar una copa (Spain) / bebida (Latin America)?
¿kee-YEHR-ehs sah-LEER ah toh-MAHR OO-nah COH-pah / beh-bee-dah?

Another way to ask someone out in Spanish is to simply ask:

Do you want to go out with me?
¿Quieres salir conmigo?
¿kee-YEHR-ehs sah-LEER cohn MEE-goh?

It would be good to follow this question up by asking them what they would like to do:

What do you like to do?
¿Que tipo de cosas le gusta hacer?
keh TEE-poh deh COH-sahs leh GOO-stah ah-SEHR

I always find either the lunch option or asking the other person what they like to do to be the safest. The lunch option is safe because if it isn’t working out you can simply bolt after the lunch.

Asking what the other person wants to do is safe because it gives you an insight into who they are, you will definitely suggest something that they are interested in which would make them more likely to say "yes," and it also gives you topics of conversation for your upcoming date. What other ways have you used to ask someone out in Spanish?

4 ways to say "I miss you" in Spanish

There are two ways to say "I miss you" in Spanish that are the most common. Which one you will hear more depends whether you are in Spain or Latin America.

The most common way to say "I miss you" in Latin America uses the verb extrañar:

I miss you.
Te extraño.
teh ehks-trahn-yoh.

The most common way to say "I miss you" in Spain uses the verb echar:

I miss you.
Te echo de menos.
teh eh-choh deh meh-nohs.

Here are two more ways to say it that aren't as common as the above phrases:

I miss you. / I need you.
Me haces falta.
meh ah-sehs fahl-tah.

The literal translation of the above phrase doesn't translate very well to English. It uses the word falta which means "lack." It translates more to "I need you" but it is commonly used to say "I miss you" and means basically the same thing.

Here is another way to say "I miss you":

I miss you. / I long for you.
Te añoro.
teh ahn-yoh-roh.

The above phrase is not very common but says "I miss you" with a little more flair. It's like saying "I long for you."

I'll mention a couple mistakes to watch out for.

Remember if you are talking about “missing” a bus or plane because you did not make it on time use the verb perder instead of the above verbs:

I missed the plane because I woke up late.
Perdí el avión porque yo me desperté tarde.
Pehr-DEE ehl ah-vee-OHN pohr-keh meh dehs-pehr-TEH tahr-deh.

If you want to say you “missed out” on some event like a party or soccer game you can use the reflexive version of perder which is perderse:

I missed out on the party.
Me perdí la fiesta.
Meh pehr-DEE lah fee-esh-tah.

Don't be these guys

I want to throw a link at this woman living in Panama and observing the male tourists hitting on the local chicas… in English. You've probably seen this if you've spent time in tourist spots in Latin America. I’ve witnessed this go down more than a few times. Accurate and good for a chuckle. Like she says though, at least they're giving it a shot.

Spanish love phrases

There is nothing like being in love.  You know, that special feeling you get when you just think about that special someone or how your heart might skip a beat (or two) when they walk in the room.

When you are in love, you want to be able to express your feelings to that person through not only what you say but how you say it.

Love is a universal feeling, but the phrases and expressions can vary from language to language.  Spanish love phrases and expressions of love are no different.

Think about how you might address someone that you love in English.  “My love,” “my darling” and "my dear" are three common ways of addressing the one you love.

my love my darling my dear
mi amor mi cariño mi querido
mee ah-MOHR mee cah-REE-nyoh mee keh-REE-doh

These all mean basically the same thing in Spanish....“You are the one I care about.”  Do you typically use a nick name or pet name?  What are some nicknames that you use?

The word vida (VEE-dah) is often used in Spanish love phrases.  By itself, vida simply means life. Calling someone Mi vida (mee VEE-dah) means you are saying that they are a significant part of your life.  You can say “love life” like this:

Love life.
Vida sentimental.
VEE-dah sehn-tee-MEHN-tahl.

Here are three Spanish love phrases you can start off with:

You are the love of my life.
Eres el amor de mi vida.
EH-rehs ehl ah-MOHR deh mee VEE-dah.

I'm in love with you.
Estoy enamorado/a de ti.
EHS-toy ehn-ah-moh-RAH-doh/ah deh tee.

My love for you never ends.
Mi amor por ti nunca se acaba.
mee ah-MOHR por tee NOON-kah seh ah-KAH-bah.

Expressing your love and feelings is the same in any language, but knowing how to say it naturally in someone else’s native tongue can really make a difference.

What are some of the typical Spanish love phrases or English love phrases that you use? We would love to hear some ideas for love phrases from all you love birds palomitos (pah-loh-MEE-tohs) out there!

Sexual Phrases In Spanish

When it comes to sexual phrases in Spanish a lot of countries have their own specific slang and terms. With that in mind I’ve tried to list phrases here that are common and understood in any Spanish speaking country. Here’s how you can tell someone how turned on you are:

You are really turning me on.
Me estás poniendo muy caliente.
meh ehs-tAHs poh-nee-ehn-doh mwee kah-lee-ehn-teh.

In Spanish it’s more common to say poniendo “putting” as in “putting me hot” or “putting me horny” than “making me hot,” “making me horny” or "turning me on."

Just like in English there’s a pretty wide range of ways to say you want to have sex:

From:

Make love to me.
Hazme el amor.
ahs-meh ehl ah-mohr.

To:

Let’s fuck.
Vamos a coger. (common in Latin America)
vah-mohs ah koh-hehr.

Let’s fuck.
Vamos a follar. (common in Spain)
vah-mohs ah foh-yahr.

Here’s a couple things you can say during sex when you want to say how good something feels:

Me encanta.
meh ehn-kahn-tah.

Qué rico.
kEH ree-koh.

Everyone likes compliments about how great they are in bed. So here’s a couple you can look forward to using. Keep in mind though if you’re going to be having sex with them again, you compliment them, and you actually didn’t like it that much you’ll probably wind up with the same thing next time.

With that said, here’s a couple ways to compliment someone’s performance:

You're great in bed.
Eres fabuloso/a en la cama.
eh-rehs fah-boo-loh-soh/ah ehn lah kah-mah.

And if your eyes got dislodged from their sockets from the intensity…

That was the best sex I've ever had.
Ha sido el mejor sexo de mi vida.
ah see-doh ehl meh-hohr sehks-oh deh mee vee-dah.

How to say "I love you" in Spanish

As with any language, there can be more than one way to say certain things in Spanish. An example of this is how to say “I love you.” There are two main ways to say “I love you” in Spanish.

Te amo.
teh AH-moh.

or…

Te quiero.
teh kee-YEHR-oh.

In some areas, they mean exactly the same thing. However, in other areas they mean two different levels of love. In this instance, te quiero is not as strong of a sentiment as te amo. Te quiero is used more for friends and relatives whereas te amo is reserved more for boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife relationships. Te amo is also a strong sentiment expressed between children and their parents in some areas.

Te quiero is often used to express "I want you," but using the phrase te deseo (teh deh-SEH-oh) would probably be better so that you are not mistakenly expressing “I love you” in Spanish instead of "I desire you."

A good way to remember the difference is when you talk about someone falling in love or being in love. For example:

They are in love.
Están enamorados el uno del otro.
eh-STAHN ehn-AH-moh-rah-dohs ehl OO-noh dehl OH-troh.

The word enamorados contains the word amo.

What expressions do you use to express “I love you” in Spanish? Do you use te amo and te quiero interchangeably or do you use them separately depending on the relationship?

Spanish terms related to hooking up and dating

Whether you are looking for a relationship with commitment or one with no strings attached, you want to make sure that the person you are interested in is on the same page.

After all, if you just wanted one date with some drinks and maybe some alone time afterwards, you probably wouldn’t be seeking the company of someone who is looking for something long term.

Likewise, if you wanted commitment you likely would not waste your time with a player. By doing a little homework and learning some Spanish terms you can get the inside scoop on whether or not the other person is right for you.

The way someone expresses a person’s availability can give you some significant insight. For instance, he is single could be said:

He is single.
Es soltero.
ehs sohl-TEH-roh.

Whereas…

Es mujeriego.
ehs moo-hehr-ee-eh-goh.

…is a Spanish term for he is a "player" or not interested in a long-term relationship.

Here’s a couple random phrases. Most of us would like to keep things simple and not become part of a…

Love triangle.
Triángulo amoroso.
tree-AHN-goo-loh ah-moh-ROH-soh.

…so we want to make sure that hooking up or dating isn’t going to put us in a sticky situation. However, some of you are fine with being the…

Secret Lover.
Amante Secreto.
ah-MAHN-teh seh-CREH-toh.

Whether hooking up, dating or having an occasional fling is your thing, learning some Spanish dating terms can help you to find someone else who is interested in a similar relationship so that everyone gets what they are looking for in the end. We all could use help to make the most out of a relationship.

Have you found any translations helpful to find out someone else’s intentions in a relationship or to find out if they are available in the first place?
