Getting background info on people you meet

I added a new section to the Hook Up Spanish Phrase Guide on Getting background info. I started today with absurdly basic stuff like what's your name, where you from, where you live, etc.. I'll be adding more in depth phrases to this.

How to say in Spanish Valentine's Day and related phrases

Since this post goes out a couple days before St. Valentine's Day, here are some translations if you're not familiar with them.

Here's the literal translation of St. Valentine's Day:

St. Valentine's Day
día de San Valentín
dEE-ah deh sahn vah-lehn-tEEn

In a lot of places the literal translation isn't used as much as
one of the following:

Day of Love and Friendship
día del amor y la amistad
dEE-ah dehl ah-mohr ee lah ah-mees-tahd

or

Day of Lovers
día de los enamorados
dEE-ah deh lohs eh-nah-moh-rah-dohs

Asking someone to be your "valentine" isn't really used but here are a couple literal translations. These would probably work better speaking Spanish in the US rather than Latin America or Spain:

Do you want to be my valentine?
¿Quieres ser mi Valentín?
¿kee-ehr-ehs sehr mee vah-lehn-tEEn?

or

Do you want to be my valentine?
¿Quieres ser mi pareja de San Valentín?
¿kee-ehr-ehs sehr mee pah-reh-hah deh sahn vah-lehn-tEEn?

In Latin America or Spain rather than saying "valentine" it would be better to say something like this:

On St. Valentine's Day do you want to be my boyfriend/girlfriend?
¿En el Día de los Enamorados, quieres ser mi novio/a?
¿ehn ehl dEE-ah deh lohs ehn-ahm-oh-rah-dosh kee-ehr-ehs sehr mee noh-vee-oh/ah?

Can't forget Cupid:

Cupid
Cupido
koo-pee-doh

Spanish foreplay, simple and direct

I've added a nifty mix and match page for creating Spanish foreplay phrases to the Hook Up Spanish Phrase Guide. Just take one of the verbs on the page and add one of the nouns for hundreds of combinations and hours of fun. All the verbs from "caress" to "bite" and all the nouns from "neck" to "foreskin."

Giving compliments temporary vs. permanent

Since Spanish has two forms of "to be", ser and estar, it's common for people new to the language not to know which verb to use or when to use one or the other when complimenting someone on their looks or personality. This post will clear this up for you easily.

Since estar is more for temporary situations use it when complimenting someone at that particular time.

If you want to tell a woman that she looks beautiful right now or today or this evening you can say:

You are beautiful. (You look beautiful right now)
Estás hermosa.
eh-STAHS ehr-moh-sah.

To compliment a guy:

You are handsome. (You look handsome right now)
Estás guapo.
eh-STAHS gwah-poh.

If you want to tell someone they are a beautiful woman or a handsome man, use ser instead:

You are beautiful.
Eres hermosa.
eh-rehs ehr-moh-sah.

You are handsome.
Eres guapo.
eh-rehs gwah-poh.
