Simple Spanish pickup lines

When it comes to picking women up, whether it is for a one time date or for a long term interest, cheesy Spanish pickup lines typically don't work. What we are interested in is conversation and a more direct approach. It automatically lowers your IQ a few points when you use a lame pickup line such as:

Did you hurt yourself when you fell from heaven?
¿Te has hecho daño cuando calló del cielo?
teh ahs EH-choh DAH-nyho CWAHN-doh cah-YOH dehl see-EH-yoh

Try simply introducing yourself, asking if they want a drink, commenting on something going on around you, or complimenting something about them. Here’s three examples that cover each one of these:

Can I buy you a drink?
¿Puedo comprarte una bebida?
PWEH-doh cohm-PRAHR-teh OO-nah be-BEE-dah

This is a great song. Would you like to dance?
Esta es una canción excelente.  ¿Quieres bailar conmigo?
EH-stah ehs OO-nah cahn-see-OHN ehk-sah-LEHN-teh. kee-YEHR-ehs bah-ee-LAHR cohn-MEE-goh

You have a beautiful smile.
Tienes una sonrisa muy bonita.
tee-YEHN-ehs OO-nah sohn-REE-sah moy boh-NEE-tah

Ladies, the same goes for you. You don’t have to come up with some off the wall Spanish pickup lines. Just be direct and strike up a conversation. You also need to keep in mind that body language plays a big roll in showing your interest in someone or seeing if they are interested in you. Using eye contact and smiling will let the other person know you are interested. In the end, be yourself and you will be more comfortable when meeting someone new. What are some Spanish pickup lines that have worked or haven’t worked for you?

More useful info for toasting in Spanish

I want to expand on Jason's post about How to make a toast in Spanish and the phrases he added to the Hook Up Spanish Phrase Guide.

Whether you just bought someone a drink at the bar, are out on your first date, or sharing a bottle of wine for something special, you might want to mark the occasion with a toast. Toasting in Spanish can be just as simple as toasting in English. For starters, salud (sah-LOOD) is a simple, typical toast. It basically means “to your health.” However, it is also used when someone sneezes, so you might want to consider saying something a little more romantic.

This leads us to a one word, meaningful toast. For this type of toast all you have to know is some basic Spanish. You can raise your glass to the other person and say one word such as amistad (ah-mee-STAHD), which means “friendship,” or amor (ah-MOHR), which means “love,” or el futuro (ehl foo-TOO-roh), which means “the future.”

If you want to get fancier with the toast, you can add a little to it by saying something such as:

I’d like to propose a toast to…
Me gustaría proponer un brindis por…
meh goo-stah-REE-ah proh-poh-NEHR oon BRIHN-dihs pohr…

or

Let’s toast to…
Brindemos por
brihn-DEH-mohs pohr…

Then you would add something at the end of the sentence such as amor or nostros mismos (noh-SOH-trohs MIHS-mohs) which means “us.” However you decide to toast, know that you don’t have to make toasting in Spanish to be a complicated toast or thought. Sometimes less is more such as toasting to love or each other and ending the toast with a kiss. What are some other phrases for toasting in Spanish?

How to Propose in Spanish

So you have found the person that you want to be with for the rest of your life? The time has come to pop the question and ask them to marry you. Finding the right way to say and express how important that someone special is to you is not always easy. After all, your feelings run so deep that you can’t imagine not being with them forever. There are many ways you can propose in Spanish. Let’s start with the basics.

Will you marry me?
¿Quieres casarte conmigo?
kee-YEHR-ehs cah-SAHR-teh cohn-MEE-goh

Now that you know how to ask the official question, start thinking about what you want to say leading up to the proposal. Think about what is special about the other person. What makes you want to marry them? Learning how to propose in Spanish is more than just asking them, it is also telling them how deeply you care for them. Examples of reasons that you want to marry them include:

I want to be with you forever.
Quiero estar contigo para siempre.
kee-YEHR-oh eh-STAR cohn-TEE-goh PAH-rah see-YEHM-preh

I can’t imagine my life without you.
No puedo imaginar mi vida sin ti.
Noh PWEH-doh ee-mah-jee-NAHR mee VEE-dah sihn tee.

I want to be with you for the rest of my life.
Quiero pasar el resto de mi vida contigo.
kee-YEHR-oh pah-SAHR ehl REH-stoh deh mee VEE-dah cohn-TEE-goh

I want to grow old together.
Quiero que envejezcamos juntos.
kee-YEHR-oh keh ehn-veh-jehz-CAH-mohs HOON-tohs

However you choose to propose in Spanish, make sure you make it special and that you fully let the other person know how special they are to you. What are some other ways to propose in Spanish?

Spanish Love Letters

For some, saying how you feel about another person can be difficult. It isn’t usually because you don’t know how you feel, it is that it can be intimidating to say the words out loud, face-to-face. For this reason, you might want to consider writing your feelings in a Spanish love letter. Often the written word can have more impact because you may feel more freedom when writing your most intimate thoughts verses speaking them.

When starting Spanish love letters, you need to keep in mind the difference between how you address someone you love versus how you start any other letter. In English, you start the letter the same way for a variety of audiences such as “Dear Tom,” or “Dear Mr. Smith,” or “Dear Sir or Madam.” However, in Spanish, you will use a variety of words for “Dear” depending on the audience.

If it is simply an aquantaince or a business letter, you would use the word estimado (eh-stee-MAH-doh) such as:

Dear Mr. Martinez
Estimado Señor Martinez
eh-stee-MAH-doh see-NYOHR mahr-TEE-nehz

or

Dear Madam
Estimada Señora
eh-stee-MAH-dah see-NYOHR-ah

The word for “Dear” that signifies endearment, love, a family member or even a close friend is Querido (keh-REE-doh):

Dear Fernando
Querido Fernando
keh-REE-doh fehr-NAHN-doh

Since how you start a letter sets the tone of the letter, you need to think about how serious your relationship is before you begin writing Spanish love letters. After all, if you have just started dating someone, you might not be ready to dive into the querido stage yet. What are some ideas for Spanish love letters that you have either written or received that could help out someone looking for a way to express themselves?

Compliments in Spanish

Let’s face it, we all love to get compliments.  It makes us feel good about ourselves, makes us feel more attractive and boosts our confidence.  If you are interested in someone who speaks Spanish, learning how to give compliments in Spanish can help you strike up a conversation, let the other person know you are interested, or further a relationship that you are already in.

A basic phrase that you need to learn to give compliments is “you are + adjective” Tú eres (too EHR –ehs).  You can then insert whatever compliment you want to give such as “beautiful” hermosa (ehr-MOH-sah), “handsome” guapo (GWAH-poh), “Sexy” sexy (SEKS-ee), etc.

Many men like compliments that boost their masculinity.  It all goes back to the machismo (mah-CHEES-moh) or “male pride or virility” that is very much part of the Latin American culture.

You must workout.
Debes de hacer ejercicio.
DEH-behs deh ah-SEHR eh-jehr-SEE-see-oh.

You are so strong.
Eres muy forzudo (or fuerte).
EHR-ehs mohy fohr-ZOO-doh (or FWEHR-teh).

If you are attracted to a woman who is with her grown daughter, one great compliment in Spanish that you can give her is to tell her that she and her sister look just alike.  After all, one of the highest compliments you can give to a woman is to tell her that she looks younger than she actually is.

You look like your sister.
Te pareces a tu hermana.
teh pah-REH-sehs ah too ehr-MAH-nah

When giving a compliment in Spanish, think about what kind of things you like to hear about yourself, what makes you feel good about yourself.  What are some other compliments in Spanish that you have either received or used in the past?

Spanish words for drinks

In one of our previous blog posts we talked about how to ask someone out and included asking someone out for a drink:

Do you want to go out for a drink?
¿Quieres salir a tomar una copa?
¿kee-YEHR-ehs sah-LEER ah toh-MAHR OO-nah COH-pah?

Now that you know how to ask someone out, what do you do when they say “yes”?  Let’s learn some Spanish words for drinks and how to order alcoholic drinks. A good place to start is by asking them what they like to drink:

What would you like to drink?
¿Qué quieres (or querías) tomar?
¿keh kee-YEHR-ehs (or keh-REE-ahs) toh-MAHR?

Their answer will likely range anywhere from cerveza (sehr-VEH-zah) or “beer” to un martini (oohn mahr-TEE-nee) or “martini” to un combinado dulce (oohn cohm-bee-NAH-doh DOOL-seh) or “a sweet cocktail”.  They might also want an extra shot in their drink to make it stronger.

A shot of rum
Un trago de ron
oohn TRAH-goh deh rohn

For a romantic dinner, you might order some wine.  This opens a whole list of things you need to consider from type of wine to how much.

Do you like [red/white/rosé] wine?
¿Te gusta el vino [tinto/blanco/rosado]?
teh GOO-stah ehl [VEE-noh TEEN-toh/BLAN-coh/roh-SAH-doh]?

Do you want a glass of wine or a bottle of wine?
¿Quieres una copa de vino o una botella de vino?
¿kee-YEHR-ehs OOH-nah COH-pah deh VEE-noh oh OOH-nah boh-TEH-yah deh VEE-noh?

By learning Spanish words for drinks, you can help make a date or even simply ordering a drink for someone you just met a breeze.  Good wine, good conversation, good company can be the beginnings of something, well, good!  What other Spanish words for drinks or phrases for ordering drinks can you share?

Asking for phone numbers in Spanish

Whether you have seen someone across the room that has sparked your interest or you have just spent the whole evening talking to someone you are attracted to, don’t end the evening without asking for their phone number.  It doesn’t hurt to ask and you don’t want to let the opportunity pass you by to have this encounter grow into something else.

The first thing when asking for numbers in Spanish is to learn your numbers in Spanish from 1-100.  The reason for this is that when someone gives you their phone number in Spanish they are going to combine numbers instead of giving them to you individually.

For example, 555-555-5555 is typically given as:

Area five fifty-five, five fifty-five, fifty-five, fifty-five
Área cinco cincuenta y cinco, cinco cincuenta y cinco, cincuenta y cinco, cincuenta y cinco
AH-reh-ah SIHN-coh sihn-CWEHN-tah ee SIHN-coh, SIHN-coh sihn-CWEHN-tah ee SIHN-coh, sihn-CWEHN-tah ee SIHN-coh, sihn-CWEHN-tah ee SIHN-coh

As you can see, if all you know is 1-10 you will never understand the phone number when it is given to you.  Once you are ready to ask, asking for phone numbers in Spanish is simple:

Can I have your (telephone) number?
¿Puedo tener tu número (de teléfono)?
PWEH-doh tehn-EHR too NOO-mehr-oh (deh tehl-EH-foh-noh)

I put telephone in parenthesis because you will find that most people will just ask for your “number” and leave off “telephone.”  And remember, if you are in doubt, have them “write it down,” escríbelo (eh-SKREE-beh-loh), so that you make sure you have the correct number.  How else could you ask someone for their phone number in Spanish?
