Boyfriend In Spanish

The spanish translation of “boyfriend” is novio:

boyfriend
novio
noh-vee-oh

Ex boyfriend is just like in English:

ex boyfriend
ex novio
ehks noh-vee-oh

In most Spanish speaking countries “boyfriend” is novio but in some places novio means more of a fiancée and a boyfriend is called amigo.

Some Spanish nicknames for “boyfriend” are – cariño, mi corazón, mi amor, mi vida, bebe, papi, flaquito and gordito (yes, it means little fatty).

I split the last part here in two sections, one for guys, one for gals. Here are related phrases that guys would use:

If you want to ask a girl if she has a boyfriend just remember in Spanish they don’t ask “do you have a boyfriend?” they just say “do you have boyfriend?” They don’t use the indefinite article “a”  before boyfriend like we do in English.

Do you have a boyfriend?
¿Tienes novio?
¿tee-ehn-ehs noh-vee-oh?

Does she have a boyfriend?
¿Tiene novio (ella)?
¿tee-eh-neh noh-vee-oh (eh-yah)?

Is this your boyfriend?
¿Es tu novio?
¿ehs too noh-vee-oh?

Is this her boyfriend?
¿Es su novio?
¿ehs soo noh-vee-oh?

Where is your boyfriend?
¿Donde está tu novio?
¿dohn-deh ehs-tAH too noh-vee-oh?

Sometimes you might need to say it yourself:

I’m her boyfriend.
Soy el novio de ella.
soy ehl noh-vee-oh deh eh-yah.

These are phrases that women can use. Here is how to say “my boyfriend”:

My boyfriend
Mi novio
mee noh-vee-oh

I (don’t) have a boyfriend.
(No) tengo novio.
(noh) tehn-goh noh-vee-oh.

By putting no before tengo novio you negate the sentence and you’re saying you don’t have a boyfriend. Like I mentioned earlier you don’t use an indefinite article like in English- you say “I don’t have boyfriend” not “I don’t have a boyfriend.”

I’m here with my boyfriend.
Estoy aquí con mi novio.
ehs-toy ah-kEE kohn mee noh-vee-oh.

This is my boyfriend.
Este es mi novio.
ehs-teh ehs mee noh-vee-oh.

He (over there) is my boyfriend.
Él (allá) es mi novio.
EHl (ah-yAH) ehs mee noh-veeoh.

I love my boyfriend.
Quiero a mi novio.
kee-ehr-oh ah mee noh-vee-oh.

I broke up with my boyfriend.
Rompí con mi novio.
rohm-pEE kohn mee noh-vee-oh.

My boyfriend cheated on me.
Mi novio me puso los cuernos.
mee noh-vee-oh meh poo-soh lohs kwehr-nohs.
