To cheat on someone in Spanish

Do you have a feeling your novio/a is sleeping with someone else? Here's a couple ways to confront them. The most common way is:

You're cheating on me!
¡Me estás poniendo los cuernos!
¡meh ehs-tAHs poh-nee-ehn-do lohs cwehr-nohs!

Cuernos means "horns." The literal translation of this is "You're putting the horns to me." This is an informal/colloquial way to say it but it's most common. A more formal way to say it is:

You're cheating on me!
¡Me estás engañando!
¡meh ehs-tAHs ehn-gahn-yahn-doh!

Which literally translates to "You're deceiving me" but if you're speaking to your Spanish girlfriend/boyfriend they know what you're talking about. If you want to confront them about why they cheated on you, you can say:

Why did you cheat on me?
¿Por qué me pusiste los cuernos?
¿pohr kEH meh poo-sees-teh lohs cwehr-nohs?

…or..

Why did you cheat on me?
¿Por qué me engañaste?
¿por kEH meh ehn-gahn-yahs-teh?

An unfaithful lover/spouse is infiel.

If you someone cheated you on a game or a transaction you can still say ¿Por qué me engañaste? The cheater would be called a tramposo.

Excited vs. Horny in Spanish

People starting out learning Spanish sometimes use excitado/a for the word "excited" since they are spelled almost the same. Excitado/a does mean "excited" but in a sexual way. If you're excited about something, like a vacation for example, you want to use emocionado/a instead. To describe something exciting you can use emocionante.

I'm excited. (horny)
Estoy excitado/a.
ehs-toy ehk-see-tah-doh/ah.

I'm excited. (enthusiastic, thrilled)
Estoy emocionado/a.
ehs-toy eh-moh-see-ohn-ah-doh/ah.

It was exciting.
Fue emocionante.
fweh eh-moh-see-ohn-ahn-teh.

Excitado/a is probably the most formal way to say "horny." Here's some others; caliente, cachondo/a (depending on the country can mean "horny" in a more humorous way) and arrecho/a (probably less universal than the others).

If you want to tell your lover that he/she is making you horny in Spanish remember they that they say "putting me horny" using the verb poner instead of "making me horny" using the verb hacer:

You are (really) making me horny.
Me estás poniendo (muy) caliente.
meh ehs-tAHs poh-nee-ehn-doh (mwee) kah-lee-ehn-teh.

Enjoy!

Giving compliments temporary vs. permanent

Since Spanish has two forms of "to be", ser and estar, it's common for people new to the language not to know which verb to use or when to use one or the other when complimenting someone on their looks or personality. This post will clear this up for you easily.

Since estar is more for temporary situations use it when complimenting someone at that particular time.

If you want to tell a woman that she looks beautiful right now or today or this evening you can say:

You are beautiful. (You look beautiful right now)
Estás hermosa.
eh-STAHS ehr-moh-sah.

To compliment a guy:

You are handsome. (You look handsome right now)
Estás guapo.
eh-STAHS gwah-poh.

If you want to tell someone they are a beautiful woman or a handsome man, use ser instead:

You are beautiful.
Eres hermosa.
eh-rehs ehr-moh-sah.

You are handsome.
Eres guapo.
eh-rehs gwah-poh.

Spanish Love Letters

For some, saying how you feel about another person can be difficult. It isn’t usually because you don’t know how you feel, it is that it can be intimidating to say the words out loud, face-to-face. For this reason, you might want to consider writing your feelings in a Spanish love letter. Often the written word can have more impact because you may feel more freedom when writing your most intimate thoughts verses speaking them.

When starting Spanish love letters, you need to keep in mind the difference between how you address someone you love versus how you start any other letter. In English, you start the letter the same way for a variety of audiences such as “Dear Tom,” or “Dear Mr. Smith,” or “Dear Sir or Madam.” However, in Spanish, you will use a variety of words for “Dear” depending on the audience.

If it is simply an aquantaince or a business letter, you would use the word estimado (eh-stee-MAH-doh) such as:

Dear Mr. Martinez
Estimado Señor Martinez
eh-stee-MAH-doh see-NYOHR mahr-TEE-nehz

or

Dear Madam
Estimada Señora
eh-stee-MAH-dah see-NYOHR-ah

The word for “Dear” that signifies endearment, love, a family member or even a close friend is Querido (keh-REE-doh):

Dear Fernando
Querido Fernando
keh-REE-doh fehr-NAHN-doh

Since how you start a letter sets the tone of the letter, you need to think about how serious your relationship is before you begin writing Spanish love letters. After all, if you have just started dating someone, you might not be ready to dive into the querido stage yet. What are some ideas for Spanish love letters that you have either written or received that could help out someone looking for a way to express themselves?

Attracting attention in Spanish

When you are translating phrases from English to Spanish, you can't always do a literal translation since it would lose its meaning after the translation.

One example is the word "attention" used in different contexts.

In English it's more common to say "attracting attention" where in Spanish it's more common to say "calling attention."

To attract attention...
Llamar la atención...
yah-MAHR lah ah-tehn-see-OHN...

If someone likes to attract attention you could say:

He/She likes to attract attention.
Él/Ella le gusta llamar la atención.
EHL/EH-yah leh GOO-stah yah-MAHR lah ah-tehn-see-OHN.

Similarly, if someone catches your eye and you wanted to say you are interested in them or attracted to them you could say:

He/She caught (or attracted) my attention.
Él/Ella me llamó la atención.
Ehl/EH-yah meh yah-MOH lah ah-tehn-see-OHN.

In the following phrases you can use it to describe how attractive someone is:

She is totally hot.
Ella es una chica que llama la atención.
EH-yah ehs oon-ah chee-kah keh yah-mah lah ah-tehn-see-OHN.

He is totally hot.
Él es un chico que llama la atención.
EHL ehs oon chee-koh keh yah-mah lah ah-tehn-see-OHN.

Here's something else to watch out for. If you want to tell somebody to pay attention to something you would use "lend attention" instead of "pay attention." So:

Pay attention!
¡Presta atención!
¡Preh-stah ah-tehn-see-OHN!

Sometimes the literal translation of something can really change the meaning or sentiment. If someone is attracting your attention, you want to be sure they know what you mean. Did you pay attention?

How to ask "Are you single?" in Spanish

When it comes to dating knowing whether or not a person is available is one of the most important things on the checklist.

If you want to ask if someone is single you would use the word soltero for a male and soltera for a female:

Are you single?
¿Eres soltero/a?
¿EH-rehs sohl-TEH-roh/ah?

When asking if someone is single, you use a conjugation of ser or estar as the verb. Depending on the area where you are, you might find one used more than the other, but they are generally interchangeable in this context.

He/She is single.
Está soltero/a. (estar)
eh-STAH sohl-TEH-roh/ah.

He/She is single.
Es soltero/a. (ser)
ehs sohl-TEH-roh/ah.

Solterón (sohl-teh-ROHN) for males and solterona (sohl-teh-ROHN-ah) for females are a stronger way to say soltero/a but their meanings are quite different.

If a male is said to be a solterón this could mean that they are either a confirmed or long term bachelor. This isn't to say that they might never want to settle down, but chances are they are more of a player than someone interested in commitment.

On the other hand solterona tends to categorize a female being an "old maid" which is much more derogatory than the male version, so you wouldn't want to ask someone ¿Eres solterona? or you might be wearing a drink instead of sharing one.

Talking about attraction in Spanish

We have all been attracted to someone.  Sometimes it is immediate, almost like an electric charge that occurs between you and the other person.

It's no wonder that the basis for many of the Spanish words for “attraction” is the word atraer (ah-trah-EHR) as in the attraction between two magnets, that uncontrollable pull between two magnetic objects:

I was immediately attracted to [him/her].
Inmediatamente me sentí atraído por [él/ella].
ihn-meh-dee-ah-tah-MEHN-teh meh sehn-TEE ah-trah-EE-doh pohr [EHL/EH-yah].

If you are talking about the word “attraction” as a noun in reference to an object or thing you would use encanto (ehn-CAHN-toh) or atractivo (ah-trahk-TEE-voh) whereas “attraction” in reference to a person is atracción. Such as:

sexual attraction
atracción sexual
ah-trahc-see-OHN sehks-oo-AHL

When you talk about being attracted to someone you also express it differently than you would express being attracted to an object.  Being attracted (or not attracted) to a place or thing would be expressed in this way:

I am not attracted to the country life.
Para mí la vida en el campo no tiene ningún encanto.
PAH-rah mee lah VEE-dah ehn ehl CAHM-poh noh tee-YEHN-eh nihn-GOON ehn-CAHN-toh.

One of the best things about having a relationship with someone who is Latino/Latina is that you generally can be more opens, so if you are attracted to someone, you can just come right out and tell them.

I find you attractive.
Me pareces atractivo/a.
meh pah-reh-sehs ah-trahk-TEE-voh/ah.

What Spanish words for attraction have you used to express your feelings to or about someone else?
